Shu Yang is an Associate Professor at Western Michigan University, specializing in literary, cultural and gender studies on modern China. Her research focuses on changing representations and roles of womanhood across the pre-modern–modern divide. She has published in journals including Gender & History, Nan Nü: Men, Women and Gender in China, Chinese Literature: Essays, Articles, Reviews and Modern Chinese Literature and Culture. She is now working on a monograph on the discourse of hysteria in Republican China.
