Ever since I volunteered to help establish a community orchard, I have been researching the hidden history of apples and orchards. Nearly everyone has eaten an apple, but we are more distanced than ever from the story of how they reach our fruit bowls. With a background in food and social history, I wrote my PhD at the University of Essex on the social and cultural history of the apple and the orchard. I used that work as the basis for this book. I am currently researching apples in Japan and Japanese culture.
