Irma Hersel

Irma Hersel is a Ventura County–based Latina children’s author and storyteller dedicated to creating meaningful, culturally rooted stories for young readers. She is the author of Where Nopalitos Grow and Where Chocolate Grows, books that introduce children to culture, family traditions, and where everyday things come from through engaging storytelling and hands-on learning.

Her stories are written in English with Spanish words woven throughout, along with a simple glossary, making them accessible for a wide range of readers while supporting language development and cultural connection. Inspired by her childhood visits to Mexico and the memories she shared with her late cousin, Irma’s work reflects the importance of family, identity, and curiosity.

Irma holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kendall College of Art & Design at Ferris State University and an MBA from California Lutheran University. As a first-generation Mexican American raised in Holland, Michigan, she brings a unique perspective that blends creativity, culture, and education.

Her books are often used in classrooms, dual language programs, and family learning environments to spark curiosity, build confidence, and help children better understand the world around them.

Irma lives in Camarillo, California with her husband and their cats, Stripey & Blue.
