I grew up in the 1950s with eight siblings. Though our lives provided plenty of drama what with sibling rivalry, interesting farm animals, nearby woods, and an empty mansion to explore, our carefree world was overshadowed by news of World War II, and those awful men--Hitler, Hirohito, and Mussolini. Our uncles, aunts, and older cousins served around the world to save democracy and protect our country. I've used many of their dangerous and dramatic experiences in my six books of historical fiction. At home, we studied maps and listened to the radio during the war. I grew up wondering about people in other lands and other times.
