Birmingham’s Public Art is a brand new book by Birmingham photographer and author Jonathan Berg. In 180 pages this coffee-table style book looks at a city that has more public art on its streets than any other UK provincial city.
Birmingham’s Public Art is also a serious book, and presents a model of the use of public art in the built environment. This will interest those across the world interested in this area – from artists and commissioners of public art to town planners and architects. The book has 11 chapters looking at everything from early memorial and celebratory public art right up to the modern street art and new sculptural pieces, reflecting a modern and progressive European city.
Jonathan came to live in Birmingham in 1978 and had a career in the NHS and started his photographic exploration of the city in 1990.
His first book of Birmingham was published in 1994 and Positively Birmingham has now sold over 35,000 copies. His guide to the city Discovering Birmingham gives a great introduction to the city. The 5th edition came out in 2022 and is available to purchase on Amazon. Invention & Design; Elkington of Birmingham tells the story of the Jewellery Quarter through the invention of electroplating. This book contains fabulous photography by Jonathan including examples of he silverware that the Elkington firm produced for the world.
