Nick grew up in Sydney. After school, he worked a number of jobs in the Outback, including on a gas pipeline and a cattle station. At university he took a history degree, which sparked a lifelong interest in Asia.
Nick subsequently became a diplomat with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs. He had one posting in Pakistan, and another in Sri Lanka; altogether he has visited a total of eighteen Asian countries.
After diplomacy, Nick worked as a political staffer in Canberra before moving across to journalism, spending sixteen years with the Australian Financial Review, including as senior writer.
Nick now lives on the South Coast of New South Wales, reading a lot, writing a lot, and paddling a kayak in the Tasman Sea.
