I grew up in Tomah, Wisconsin, a half-Bohemian, half-German kid who loved trout fishing, swapping stories, and telling the occasional fib around a campfire. Those days on the streams and backroads taught me to see the world through a storyteller’s eyes.

Now I live on Lake Eau Claire near Augusta, Wisconsin, where I still fish, write, and enjoy the quiet beauty of the Northwoods. For many years, I taught creative writing at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, where I was lucky enough to be named Outstanding Teacher of Creative Writing three times and honored as a Writing Fellow by the National Writing Project.

I also created the country’s first state-certified substitute teacher training program, a project that grew out of my belief that good teaching changes lives.

My novel Murder on Big Stony Lonesome was inspired by a real case my sister Lucy investigated for the state crime lab. My stories tend to blend mystery, humor, and heart. and they always come back to the people and places of Wisconsin that I know best.

I’m currently working on more adventures featuring Jack von Himmel and yes, there will be wolves.
