Mathias Spohr

Mathias Spohr (* 11 May 1960, Vienna) studied drama and music before completing his doctorate in literary criticism at the University of Zurich and his habilitation in theatre studies at the University of Bayreuth. In addition to his practical work in music and theatre, he teaches at the Universities of Vienna, Bayreuth and Bern, specialising in language and media studies.

His central scholarly project is to understand Western cultural history as a history of increasing automation, which does not begin with machines, but with a conception of art, music, literature and theatre.
