Larry discovered science fiction at the early age of nine. An accidental encounter with Arthur C. Clarke’s “Childhood’s End” began a lifelong obsession that lasted through a long career in manufacturing. A career in which he became intimately associated with the cutting-edge high-tech worlds of oceanography, meteorology, and aerospace. Affiliations were likely due to the science fiction that stimulated his early interests in science, technology, and history.

Organizations for which he worked sent instruments and samplers to the deepest parts of our oceans. Another sent an electronic solution to space, solving a space shuttle problem resulting in their devices flying on every shuttle through the final years of that program. During that program, he had the honor of shaking the hand of Neil Armstrong, the first man to step onto the surface of our Moon.

If you saw a video of the wreck of the Titanic, you peered through cameras Larry helped make. If you have toured or worked on a modern American submarine, you have had a close encounter with equipment he helped supply. If you have heard about the science world’s search for neutrinos, the organization with which he was affiliated, supplied the miles of heavy-duty cables and sensors buried into the ice in Antarctica supporting that effort. They helped cap that runaway oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.

As a professional, Larry sent instruments and samplers to the bottom of the ocean and high into outer space, while his imagination soared higher. A lifetime of reading action-oriented science fiction drove a desire to impart his own unique brand of sci-fi. As science fiction, his stories stretch the boundaries of what is possible while staying as close as possible to the real limits imposed by the physical world.

His stories are thoughtful but full of action. They explore problems associated with high-tech business and the pressures of finding leading-edge solutions to urgent problems. All the while his characters react as people do. They love. They lose. People get hired. People get fired. Individuals are born. Individuals die. In Larry’s stories you will find history can ask hard questions that defeat many people while others realize them as opportunities. Then history takes a hard right turn and zags left. Danger and adventure around every corner. Around another corner, a philosophical question is considered.

While you read his stories you may find it wise advice to check the tightness of your reality suspenders, but rest assured, he will never give you a sci-fi-wedgie.
