Deborah Osborne

Deborah Osborne spent over 10 years as the first crime analyst for the Buffalo Police Department and 8 years more as a U.S. Secret Service investigative analyst. She has received awards from the profession's leading associations for her contributions, and has taught crime and intelligence analysis at the college level.

Her Routledge book, Elements of Crime Patterns: A Foundation for Theory and Practice (second edition, 2026), presents a framework for recognizing and identifying serial crimes and for understanding crime as an observable process.

In July 2026, Osborne launches The Magic Room, the first novel in The Crime Pattern Casebooks, a five-book series ranging from late 2001 through early 2027, dramatizing the work of the fictional Western New York Intelligence Analysis Center. Subsequent novels will follow at three-month intervals through July 2027. The series is a companion work to Osborne's nonfiction writing, offering through fiction what her academic work approaches through analysis.

Osborne is also a poet whose 2023 book, Luck Will Find You, offers assorted samplings from 30 years of poem-writing.
