Not to be confused with my identical twin sister Genice M. Sarcedo-Magruder, EdD, Geneva L. Sarcedo, PhD is an academic advisor in the School of Education and Human Development at University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) and academic writing coach/editor with Heartful Editor. She also teaches in the First-Year Experience program and Ethnic Studies department at CU Denver. She earned her PhD in education and human development from CU Denver in 2020. Her MA in educational organization and leadership, with an emphasis in higher education, is from University of San Francisco and she received my BS in human development and minor in education from University of California, Davis.
Prior to coming to Colorado, Dr. Sarcedo worked as an advisor for University of California, Davis and Berkeley, serving first-generation and low-income college students in the Educational Opportunity Program and Student Support Services. As a first-generation college graduate from a low-income background, her personal and professional experiences influence her research interests in student affairs, campus climate, undergraduate retention, critical race theory and whiteness in academic advising, and best and promising practices for working with first-generation and low-income college students of Color.
Dr. Sarcedo is also a proud motherscholar of a spunky grade schooler; who keeps her on her game. Her teaching, professional experience, and scholarship are directly and indirectly informed by her experience as a parent, so this is something she brings with her into academia.
