JC Bernstein is a management coach and founder of The Management Mentor. She specializes in teaching leaders to be more effective at motivating people. She earned the moniker “the fix-it GM” while at Friendly’s and worked within global organizations like JCPenney, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Five Guys. With her uncanny ability to quickly turn a failing team into a successful one, she developed the SPARK Method, which has helped managers from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups build motivated and productive teams.
As a boots-on-the-ground manager in the restaurant industry, JC found it challenging to build an enthusiastic, reliable, and consistent team. She works with managers who have read and applied countless “leadership theories and concepts” with no success. By tuning into what motivated her as an individual, she unlocked a concept that has enabled her to create the SPARK Method and use it over and over to help managers build teams that were engaged and connected to their job.
After a decade as a manager, JC spent another 10 years researching and interviewing thousands of unmotivated and disengaged employees to find out what they really want. This invaluable information has given her valuable perspective into management techniques that work in real-world settings.
JC has a BA in Psychology from Loyola Marymount University and an SPHR Certification from the Human Resource Certification Institute. When not mentoring or writing, you can find JC and her husband watching their two sons’ baseball games and jiu-jitsu tournaments. Along with a very food-driven dog, the active family lives in Connecticut.
