Phil Currie

My name is Phil Currie. Upon facing my own mortality once again having been diagnosed with cancer for the second time. After numerous suggestions to write a book from friends, I decided to give it a go.

My main reason was to leave a keepsake for my children, Grandson and future grandchildren that I won’t meet.. I also wanted to show a side of Prison that had never been wrote about before, writing a book from a Physical Education angle and the positive role PE has on Prisoners, helping them to rehabilitate and lead law abiding lives upon release.

I wanted to demonstrate that despite common opinion that every Prisoner who serves time, especially in a maximum security prison will reoffend simply isn’t true. Throughout the book i bring you many examples of men who have successfully turned their lives around, and I hopefully display how PE had a big influence on their futures.

I also write about my own personal journey throughout my near 30 year career in the Prison Service, and the rollercoaster ride of battling cancer and going through treatment and it’s side effects.

I hope my story might give hope to other Prisoners starting big sentences that all is not lost and there is hope for a brighter future. And for staff working in the Prison Service I hope it may help you realise the importance of your role and how you can make a positive impact on prisoners lives.

If you enjoy The Life Of A Gym Screw please leave a positive review, if you didn’t enjoy it, give it to someone you dislike.
