Greg Mincher

Greg Mincher is an author and wine industry professional whose career spans architecture, viticulture, wine education, and now literary fiction. With over thirty years of experience in Australia's Hunter Valley, Greg brings intimate knowledge of the wine world to his storytelling.

In 2005, Greg established The Vintry in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley—award-winning accommodation (New South Wales Tourism Awards and Hunter Tourism Awards) designed as a modern expression of the medieval wine merchants' gathering places. He owns a Shiraz vineyard planted in 2000.

Greg's wine credentials include Comité Champagne Champagne Professional certification and WSET Diploma studies. He has cultivated relationships with prestigious Champagne houses including Bollinger and Hunter Valley producers such as Tyrrell's and Brokenwood. His passion for Champagne led him to author wine education books including Champagne Confidence and Grandes Marques of Champagne, sharing his expertise with enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Born and raised in Sydney, Greg studied wine marketing at the University of Adelaide's Roseworthy campus, where a 1996 encounter with wine critic Jancis Robinson encouraged his path in wine. It was during this period, in a St Albans pub, that he discovered the word "vintry"—the 13th-century Thames landing point where Bordeaux merchants unloaded wine, discussed their trade, and shared stories. The term captured something essential about what wine meant to him: a catalyst for connection, conversation, and memory.

Greg's background in architecture and design informs his attention to structure and detail, whether crafting physical spaces for wine experiences or weaving together complex narrative threads in fiction. Before moving full-time to Pokolbin to focus on writing, he balanced careers in construction, wine tourism, and education.

His debut novel, Quantum Wine: Terroir, launches a literary thriller series that combines his intimate knowledge of viticulture with speculative fiction exploring consciousness, memory, and the inexplicable transformations that happen in sealed bottles over decades. The series follows wine writer Alex Hartley as she uncovers quantum phenomena in aged wines—a discovery that puts her in the crosshairs of those who've killed to keep these secrets buried.

The next instalment, Quantum Wine: Effervescence, will see Alex return to explore the cellars and secrets of Champagne, drawing on Greg's deep knowledge of and passion for the region.

At heart, Greg is a storyteller who believes in mentoring and nurturing people through their journeys—an approach that extends from hosting guests at The Vintry to guiding readers through worlds where wine holds more than just flavour and history.

Greg continues to operate The Vintry as a space where wine, conversation, and memory intersect. His daughter Isabella is forging her own remarkable path in the world.
