Tom Johnson

Before retiring to San Diego, Tom Johnson lived and worked in New York. He graduated from Fordham University with a degree in English Literature. Immediately after graduating from Fordham, he became a US Army infantry officer serving in combat with the 25th Infantry Division earning the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and Bronze Star. Later in his tour, Tom became the S-5 Psychological Operations officer for the Division’s 1st Brigade. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Air Medal for 149 missions over enemy territory. After, Tom transitioned to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist working in Intensive care in several NYC hospitals. During this time, he received his Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology. For 23 years, Tom was the Associate Professor and Chair of Long Island University’s Respiratory Care program. His chapter on Mass Critical Care in Wyka’s Foundations of Respiratory Care has been studied by healthcare professionals across the country. In addition, he has been published in numerous medical journals but his articles on the medical management of bioterrorism casualties led to interviews in the media during the Anthrax Attacks that followed 9-11.

​Tom and his sister Deborah Ettinger collaborated in writing Fiercely Loyal, a story of a brother and sister surviving during the turbulent first half of the 20th Century. Tom, his wife Daryl, two dogs and a crazy cat live in San Diego.
