Vickie Cox Edmondson

Vickie Cox Edmondson, Ph.D. is the author of The Thinking Strategist: Unleashing the Power of Strategic Management to Identify, Explore and Solve Problems which is now in its 2nd edition. She has been cited in various media outlets including Black Enterprise, HR Briefing, The Black Capital Network, eHow, and in the August 2022 issue of Inventors Digest. Dr. Cox Edmondson is a sought-after academic and management strategist whose influence spans across industries, professions, and business types. Her work centers on the business ownership and career advancement of members of traditionally excluded groups. In particular, she strives to close capability gaps through upskilling technical skills and business vocabulary, and driving behavioral changes at the individual and organizational level.

Teaching

With a Ph.D. in strategy from the University of Georgia, an M.B.A. from Mercer University, a BA degree earned in 3.5 years from Spelman College, and 35+ years of combined industry and classroom experience, Dr. Cox Edmondson has worked in strategic roles at two industry leaders (Procter & Gamble and United Airlines), and taught the business capstone course for four highly-ranked colleges (UGA, UAB, Morehouse and Tuskegee). She has also taught Human Resource Management, Business Communications, Corporate Survival Skills, Supply Chain Management, and Black Entrepreneurship, all courses that play a vital role in workplace success. She has strong capabilities in curriculum design, learning outcomes, and program incentives. Additionally, she served as the inaugural Associate Provost for Student Success at Morehouse. In 2022, she retired from UAB and is currently teaching at Tuskegee.

Research

The 36 peer-reviewed publications that Vickie Cox Edmondson has published make a significant contribution to the management literature in areas that have seen an increase in scholarly research over the past two decades: Black business enterprises, Black executives, and DEI in predominantly White organizations. Recently, she revisited her dissertation in which she identified five competitive strategies used in Black businesses to compete and overcome structural barriers, and those results will be published in an open access journal in the near future. The research she and Archie Carroll did on Black entrepreneur philanthropists in 1999 is well-cited. Described as expert contributors exploring entrepreneur philanthropists, our research team (sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation) earned the AFP/Skystone Partners Research Prize in 2016.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

Dr. Cox Edmondson does consulting work with Black entrepreneurs and educators on how to close individual and organizational capability gaps. She has also started and operated businesses of her own.

Service

Having served as the Executive Director for a non-profit recognized by the Georgia State Senate, taught Executive Directors of community-based organizations for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, served as the Co-Chair for advisory council for the Career Technical Agricultural Education program at Midtown High School (formerly Grady High), and been active in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.), Vickie Cox Edmondson also has a passion for non-profit work.

Personal

Dr. Vickie Cox Edmondson has been a member of Saint Smyrna Baptist Church since February 2012. In her free time, Vickie enjoys time with family and friends, decorating her home, and walking throughout Midtown Atlanta. All three of her daughters are also members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Two of her daughters are members of Phi Beta Kappa. She has three grandchildren and one on the way. She's also a bit of a maverick- a thinking strategist, not afraid to present her views and stand up for her own rights and the rights of others.
