Jeannette Roddy is an accredited counsellor/psychotherapist with BACP and the CEO of Dactari Ltd., a company specialising in domestic abuse counselling, counsellor training and research (www.dactari.co.uk). She has worked as a researcher, practitioner and supervisor with domestic abuse for over 10 years, as well as teaching counselling and counselling skills at universities in the UK. She set up and ran the Domestic Abuse Counselling Service at the University of Salford from 2019-2022. She is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Salford and an Honorary Research Fellow and York St John University.
Her PhD, A Client Informed View of Domestic Violence Counselling, provided a model of counselling, which was developed in her first book, Counselling and Psychotherapy After Domestic Violence. This model was used to develop the Competency Framework for Domestic Violence Counselling (Roddy and Gabriel, 2019). This framework formed the basis of the training programme outlined in her edited book 'Working with Client Experiences of Domestic Abuse'. Clinical work at the University of Salford found that counsellors' trained using this model were very effective at working with clients’ domestic abuse experiences.
Jeannette is passionate about helping to provide specialist services for people who have experienced domestic abuse. During her PhD she asked one of her participants if she had any regrets about the counselling. She replied that she had been trying to find good counselling for over 20 years and wished that she could have found that sooner. The work done subsequently has been designed to try and make that wish a reality, by providing resources and a practice model for those wishing to work in the field and provide general practitioners with the knowledge and skills to work well with domestic abuse.
