Seller: The Bark of the Beech Tree, Depoe Bay, OR, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Walter Goetz (illustrator). First edition thus. Here's the ruse: Supposedly, these are the notebooks of a stiff-upper-lipped, bowler hatted, mustachioed, retired English army Major who married, as his second wife, a Frenchwoman and moved to France. The notebooks, edited by an old army colleague of Thompson's called Daninos for publication in France, are disjointed and loose musings on the cultural differences between the archetypal English and the typical French, managing to poke fun at both stereotypes. Major Thompson then thoughtfully translated the French version of his notebooks back into English for this edition. That's the set-up. In actual fact, of course, this is simply a satirical French novel by Daninos, written in French and translated into English. Interestingly, there is no translator credited in this book (did they just forget, or are they trying to enhance the illusion that Major Thompson did it?!). However, the American edition from Knopf lists the translator as one Robin Farn. This book is an omnibus edition comprising 'Major Thompson Lives in France' (first published in 1955), and 'Major Thompson and I' (first published in 1957). This combined edition was first published by the Reprint Society in 1959 and here reissued in a trade edition. Illustrated (splendidly) with drawings, many full page, by Walter Goetz. Top edge staining slightly faded, correction fluid on front endpaper, small Foyles label on front pastedown, but a very good copy indeed in very good dust jacket indeed, just slightly edgeworn.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Walter Goetz (Cover design) (illustrator). 7th impression. In lovely bright, fresh looking condition. No inscriptions and pages are clean throughout, albeit a tiny bit toned at the page block edge and to the prelims. A small dent at the top edge of the front board. The dust jacket is not price clipped although there is some toning to the edges and especially the spine, not surprising really since the dj is mainly white. Also a little edge wear. In all a presentable copy.
