My career began as a professor who taught at San Diego State University, the University of Virginia, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and California State University, Long Beach. I have also spent time outside of the academic world as a full-time speechwriter for President Gerald Ford and Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca and as a consulting writer for George H. W. Bush, among others. I have been a consultant to CBS News for convention, election, and inaugural coverage while providing commentary to many other networks including CNN and FOX. I have served as the Director of Senate Services for the Republican Caucus of the U.S. Senate and as Deputy Director of the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. I was the founding president of the Freedom of Expression Foundation in Washington, D.C.I have published 24 books and over 70 scholarly articles.
