Jeffrey Meek

Jeff Meek is a lecturer in Economic & Social History at the University of Glasgow with a specialism in LGBTQ+ history in Scotland from the nineteenth century to the 1980s. His first book, Queer Voices in Post-War Scotland, examined intersections between male homosexuality and the law, religion, medicine and society. His latest book, Queer Trades, Sex and Society, examines the experiences of queer male sex workers in interwar Scotland with a focus on the Whitehats of Glasgow, the Rosebery Boys of Edinburgh, as well as the 'war on homosexuality' undertaken by 'celebrated' Scottish police officer William Merrilees. The book also explores the prosecution of Edinburgh businessman Peter Ogg, proprietor of the nightclub Maximes. Jeff has also published on the concept of 'loneliness' amongst gay and bisexual men in post-war Scotland, and on gay men and heterosexual marriage.
