Thomas Bauer

Thomas Bauer, born in 1961, is Professor of Islamic and Arabic Studies at the University of Münster and a member of the North Rhine‑Westphalia Academy for Sciences and Arts. He was awarded the prestigious Leibniz-Preiz, the Tractacus-Preis, and the WBG „WISSEN!“ non‑fiction prize for humanities and social sciences for his book “Warum es kein Mittelater gab. Das Erbe der Antike und der Orient“ (Why There Were no Islamic Middle Ages, translation ours). His groundbreaking book “A Culture of Ambiguity. An Alternative History of Islam“ (2011) has resonated well outside of the little world of Islamic Studies.
