Susan Waters

Susan Waters has taught students in almost every grade from Kindergarten to Grade 8, both as a Classroom teacher and as a Specialist teacher. From the beginning, she wanted to create a Reading “catch up” program that would provide a way for struggling readers, especially in the higher grades, to help themselves if they got behind in school.

As a Special Education Specialist and Drama Specialist, Susan has often used scripts, songs, and poems to encourage shared reading, vocabulary development, practice, and enjoyment in Reading - especially for reluctant or struggling readers. Baseball has been a very popular theme, with the much-loved Baseball Classics in ABC Moonshot. At one time, Susan played on a CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) team at Hanlan's Point in Toronto - where Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run!

Susan has also worked in Television and Radio, as a Researcher, Writer, Associate Producer, and on-air Announcer. She remembers TIME magazine's 2005 edition on Happiness, and the importance of having some control over your work and also, a friend at work. She also experienced "first hand" the importance of having reading materials that are easy to track with your eyes, and share with others. In addition, Susan understands the challenges teachers and parents face trying to help children with a wide range of strengths and abilities. She was a Workshop Presenter for the teacher's union for over 10 years on "Humour and Stress Management" - always learning from others, too!

With her background of experiences, and her love of kids, family, dogs, and Baseball, Susan created ABC Moonshot to help struggling readers overcome their feelings of discouragement and enjoy Reading and learning. Like the study guides she often used herself in school, ABC Moonshot clears up confusion, builds a solid foundation of skills, and enables students to work independently, towards a more hopeful, enjoyable future.
