Fernando Alvarez

Fernando Alvarez was born in the small town of Angamacutiro in the Mexican state of Michoacán. He immigrated to the US at the age of seventeen years old. Mr. Alvarez faced many challenges integrating to his new life in the US, mainly the language and food. He aged out of the regular education system, so he took his GED instead of finishing high school. Along the way, Mr. Alvarez met people who provided guidance and helped him achieve his goals. He entered community college and then transferred to Sacramento State University. There, he obtained a BA in psychology. Later on, in his career, he graduated from WGU with a master’s degree in instructional design.

Mr. Alvarez has dedicated his professional career to help others. He is an adult education teacher. He teaches ESL and GED in Spanish to immigrants who want to move up in life. He helps them navigate the American system as a way to pay forward what others have done for him.
