Christopher Heath

I am a historian of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages with a particular focus on both Lombard and Byzantine Italy. More broadly, my interests revolve around Historiography, Hagiography and the depictions of socio-economic and religious change between c.450 and 900. I studied at the University of Manchester, completing my part-time PhD in December 2012. Subsequently, I have undertaken teaching at both the University of Manchester and (more recently) at the Manchester Metropoltan University. I have combined this with ongoing research and writing. My PhD consisted of a study of the prose narrative structures of Paul the Deacon with particular emphasis on his Historia Langobardorum. Since then I have published a revised version of my PhD thesis for Amsterdam University Press (which extends and revises sections on the Historia Romana, Gesta Episcopum Mettensium and the Vita Sancti Gregorii Magni). I continue to undertake work with a particular focus on both Lombard and Byzantine Italy in the long-seventh century.
