Nuru Lyria
Nuru is an empowerment expert. With a BA Early Years (Hons) degree and over 20 years of experience, she has poured her passion into inspiring and igniting children’s confidence in learning and development. A native of Tanzania, where she received her initial teacher training, seasoned with a wealth of knowledge and experience, she has served children in the U.K. and abroad. While in Tanzania, Nuru had the honor of working in refugee camps with non-governmental organizations.
As a natural born leader, Nuru has successfully pioneered in leadership positions that supported Early Years Settings in the UK including coordinating a literary project called REAL (Raising Early Achievements in Literacy) which was led by the University of Sheffield. Nuru is also an experienced Children Safeguarding Lead, and has done courses in inclusion and domestic violence. When she is not working and writing, Nuru is highly involves in charity work. She has organised donations of over 200 books and like to run half marathons to fundraise for a children’s orphanage in Tanzania.
As a passionate wellness coach, Nuru is an advocate for healthy eating and living. She had helped hundreds of women to transform their health. Her Health and Wellness articles was published in East Africa’s largest print media and featured on East Africa Radio for a week. Nuru embodies the entrepreneurial spirit, and previously owned a successful beauty and hair salon in Nairobi before relocating to Trinidad and The Bahamas, where she lived before settling in the UK in 2007.
Meet Jua is Nuru’s first children’s book. This book, aimed at children of ages 2-7 years, was inspired by her professional experience and her experiences of a child ‘who looked different’ where at times her daughters were the only black children in their classrooms. The book allows children to learn how to express their feelings about their identity as well as to accept and love who they are. It is also aimed at making children learn how to be kind, valuing others and treating others with respect and dignity.
