Mama told me in my teens, when I got my first one, that I should always keep my passport up to date. "You never know when you might want to leave the country in a hurry." I have followed her advice on this matter, although I have never absconded with the church funds or run off with a Senator's wife. I like to think that I killed a man, but I didn't. It's the romantic in me.

On many occasions I have been forced to work for a living. But here and there I have managed to write about it. The five years I was teaching in China was barely like working. More like getting paid to have fun conversations with lively, interesting, young people. A bonus was the chance to travel in Southeast Asia.

When I got back to the United States in 2016 it seemed the strangest place I had visited in all my travels.
