Sonia Hu is a New York–based writer, poet, producer, publisher, and filmmaker. Born in Beijing and raised in a Shanghai family, she moved to New York in the late 1980s and earned her master’s degree in Television Production from Brooklyn College, CUNY. She previously worked with major broadcasters including CCTV, CBS, and MTV. She served as a producer for MTV Asia, where she created Village of Heavenly Sound, the first music television program produced in mainland China.
Her nonfiction, essays, fiction, and poetry have been widely published in overseas Chinese media and have been collected by the Harvard-Yenching Library and the Queens Public Library. Sonia is the author of several award-winning books, including Reminiscence of Fleeting Time, Shanghai Forever Lost, and New York Stories.
Her documentary From Stone to Stone received international recognition, winning Best First Time Filmmaker at the 2025 Munich Short Film Awards and Best Director at the 2024 Berlin Indie Film Festival.
Sonia continues to write across cultures and genres, exploring identity, memory, migration, and the emotional landscapes of modern life.
