MATILDA PHIRI’S BIOGRAPHY

Matilda Phiri is a multiple award winning Malawian Author, Blogger, Political Scientist, Actress, Model and an Entrepreneur. She holds a Bachelor of Social Science in Political Leadership with Social Work as her minor from Catholic University of Malawi. She is the author of Grace the Village Girl and Chidaliro ndi Alongo Ake fiction novels.

She is the owner of Phil stationery and General Dealers and Phil Entertainment. She supplies office stationery in different companies and banks in Malawi. She started her business in 2018 and soon she will join the movie industry making under the name of Phil entertainment. Both of her businesses are registered in the registrar’s business act of Malawi.

Matilda started writing in 2005 when she was at Blantyre Secondary School. In 2011, she started publishing various articles, poems and short stories in the Malawi News. In 2013, she was given a column in Malawi News to publish her folktales every week. She publishes her stories in local and international media. She has also written movie scripts; radio plays which are yet to be produced into movies. She has also worked with different organizations in Malawi such as the Centre for Social Research (CSR), National Statistical Office (NSO) and Invest in Knowledge (IKI) as a Social Researcher.

In 2015, Matilda became the first female writer to win third prize in the prestigious Malawi Writers Union (MAWU) Peer Gynt Children’s Book Manuscript Contest with her story titled ‘Grace the Village Girl’ which she published in March, 2018. In 2017, she also won a prize in the MAWU/FMB Short Story Competition with a story titled Smooth Operator which was published in a 2018 anthology of Women writers in Malawi ‘A Grafted Tree and Other Stories’. In 2018, she won a National Literary Awards with her Book Manuscript titled Bitter Lemonade. In 2019 she won a best Women’s entry short story award in the first capital bank and two of her stories were published in two different anthologies; ‘Stories of the Struggle for Education and Equality in Malawi,’ a Voice Flame Publication and in ‘The Death of an Idea,’ a PEN international Malawi publication.
