Carsten Schmidt

Carsten Schmidt, born in 1977 in Potsdam-Babelsberg (Germany), studied economics, art history and history at the TU and FU Berlin. While still a student, he published numerous essays on 19th and 20th century architecture. His master's thesis dealt with the development of the New York U.N. headquarters on the East River. He presented a paper on his research focus of architectural and urban transformation at the 14th IPHS Conference in Istanbul in 2010. Subsequently, he completed his PhD at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute under Prof. Dr. Paul Nolte on the architectural and urban transformation of New York: Manhattan Modern, Architecture as Social Mission and Process of Negotiation, 1929-1969 (published by LIT-Verlag). He also focuses on the architecture and urban development of Berlin, publishing numerous essays and giving lectures. Since 2020, he has been a writer for the Berlin neighborhood portal "Weddingweiser" on historical topics about Jewish life in the former working-class district and is intensively involved with Jewish history and identity.
