While writing my Master's thesis on Rostand's 'Cyrano de Bergerac', I realised there was no full biography of Edmond Rostand written for English readers. While carrying out my research, which took twenty years, I worked in education and lexicography. My editon of 'Roget's Thesaurus' (Longmans, 1982) was the first for twenty years and became a world best-seller. My Penguin edition followed in 1984.
In 2003 I published my biography, 'The Man who was Cyrano, a Life of Edmond Rostand, Creator of "Cyrano de Bergerac"', with an American company, now defunct) in 2003. I also set up Genge Press, UK (I am British and live in England) to spread knowledge of Edmond Rostand and his wonderful work. The UK edition of 'The Man who was Cyrano' (2007) is still in print, and available from Genge Press, UK (cyranoandrostand2.com). There is now a Kindle edition (Dec. 2022).
Genge Press has also published English versions of two plays by Rostand, under the title 'Sacred and Profane Love'. These plays: 'The Woman of Samaria' and 'The Last Night of Don Juan', are available as Kindle titles. Our edition of Rostand's play 'Chantecler': the French text, comprehensively annotated and introduced in English, was published in 2010. I published an edition of Rostand's 'Chantecler' in 2023, consisting of the original text, full notes and introduction in English, to help anglophones enjoy this marvellous Rostand play.
