JOHN H. BOTHWELL is a phycologist (= somebody who studies seaweeds) in the Department of Biosciences at Durham University, UK. He holds a DPhil in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, where he also won a rugby blue. He has worked on seaweeds for over 20 years in the North Atlantic, North Pacific and Indian Ocean and his group published both the first description of a brown seaweed sex chromosome and the first genome sequence of a green seaweed. He's married with one wife, two children and three cats.
