Kathryn Graven

I tell stories with both words and images. That's why I am a writer, mixed media art and lifelong sewer. I grew up in Minneapolis, lived in Japan when I was in high school, and the world was never the same.

For more than four decades I have lived, traveled and worked between the US and Asia. My journalism homes have included the Tokyo bureaus of ABC News and The Wall Street Journal. I love adult education classes - that's where I began to explore mixed media and abstract painting. Now, in my Boston art studio, I combine bold colors and found objects to make whimsical abstract mixed media art.

Always a newspaper reader, I also love Japanese literature, especially Yoko Ogawa and Banana Yoshimoto. In the summer, I live and garden on a small island in Maine. I preserve and share the bounty by making irresistible jams and pickles. I find travel and fabric shopping thrilling.
