Spells in bioengineering research and teaching, followed by entrepreneurship as a business founder and non-executive director. He has always been driven by curiosity and a hunger for knowledge.
Originally trained as a control engineer, he earned a PhD in bioengineering, followed by scholarships in Switzerland and Canada. His first adventures in rehabilitation were spent in Toronto, Canada with responsibility for developing a research portfolio and a variety of clinical services related to orthopaedics and prosthetics and orthotics.
Developing an academic career in Scotland, Derek was able to indulge his interest in research and development and innovation in business as he completed his MBA. He created Anatomical Concepts (UK) in 1995. He found it difficult to leave the relative security of academic life to fully commit to business and (dis)credits his MBA studies for teaching him hundreds of ways business can fail. He studied NLP with Michael Breen and Richard Bandler and Shotokan Karate to third dan. Now in his seventh decade, he trains every day he can with the heaviest weights he can and continues an interest in powerlifting and strength and conditioning that started in his teens.
