While volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary in the Bolivian Amazon, I met Gato, a rescued circus puma. His story and the dedication of the people who helped him inspired me to write Refuge.

After completing a course in wildlife rehabilitation, I withdrew the novel to revise it with expert guidance on the ethics and practicalities of rewilding a jaguar.
