Robert W. Spencer

Robert is an author of historical fiction living in Oxford County Maine, the foothills of the White Mountains. His Lizzie Millett Series is set in this rural area of rivers, lakes and forests. As a retired Landscape Architect, Robert not only brings to life bold characters who lived from 1860-1912, but also vividly portrays the setting in which they thrived and failed. He refers to the three titles, The Spinster's Hope Chest (2018), PROSPECTS, Mining Maine for Riches (2020) and Francena Hallett's Heart (2023) as novels about relationships in an historic setting.

His most recent novel, Conflicting Roots (2025), reveals the struggle of a modern young woman (1978) who refuses to accept that her ancestors (1675-6) were Wampanoag Native Americans who fought colonists in King Philip's War.

For forty years he and his wife lived in a 19th century row house in Charlestown, MA before moving to a Civil War era box factory sitting atop a thirty-foot wide historic split stone dam with its thunderous falls and mill pond. Such a dramatic setting provides inspiration for his writing. Besides his novels, Spencer has had poems, memoirs and non-fiction essays published in local journals, newsletters and national magazines. Other interests include gardening, hiking, climate activism, yoga, meditation and Native American studies.
