Dr. Cottrell, a well-known name in neuroanesthesiology, is a past president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and chairman emeritus and distinguished professor of the Department of Anesthesiology and the Gary and Sarah Sklar professor at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn.

He is coeditor of "Anesthesia and Neurosurgery" (Elsevier, 7th edition, 2022) and "Neuroanesthesia: Handbook of Clinical and Physiologic Essentials" (Little, Brown, 1999), and author of more than 100 articles in medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet, and the former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology.

Dr. Cottrell served as a health policy adviser to Senator Edward M. Kennedy and the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources. He was a founding member and former chair of the AIDS Action Foundation and is currently a regent for the State University of New York.
