Tom Habecker

I began my career as a ranger in the National Park Service as a student intern at Gettysburg National Military Park in 1969. After completing my degree in park administration at Penn State University, I attended orientation training at Grand Canyon National Park and took an assignment at National Capital Parks, Washington, D.C. Beginning in 1970, I served four years in the U.S.Coast Guard at a search and rescue station in Maine.

Upon my discharge from the Coast Guard in 1974, I resumed my NPS career at Yosemite National Park, working in a variety of assignments for 11 years. My duties included law enforcement, search and rescue, fire fighting, backcountry patrols, bear management, emergency medical services and snow survey work. In 1985 I transferred to Glacier National Park, Montana, serving five years as the Lake McDonald sub-district ranger.

In 1990, my family and I moved to Denali National Park where I served as the North District Ranger and Assistant Chief Ranger until my retirement in 2005.
