Fabrizio Gallai

Dr Fabrizio Gallai is Research Fellow and Lecturer at IULM in Milan, Italy. Prior to joining the University, he worked at the Universities of Bologna (Forlì campus) and UNINT in Italy, and in the UK (Universities of Salford, Manchester, and Bath). He also works as a freelance translator and (conference and public service) interpreter.

After his BA (Hons) in Translation and Liaison Interpreting and Masters degree in Conference Interpreting (English, German, and Portuguese) at the University of Trieste (Italy), he received his PhD in Interpreting from the University of Salford (Greater Manchester) in 2014. He obtained the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (English Law Option) to work for the NRPSI, and the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PgCAP) to become member of the UK’s Higher Education Academy in 2012.

His research focus is on legal and humanitarian interpreting, interpreters’ treatment of non-truth-conditional (procedural) elements of speech, ethical standards and a skills certification system for interpreters, and in the interface between Relevance Theory and Interpreting and Translation studies. He has delivered papers at national and international conferences, and is the author of a range of articles and a volume on cognitive pragmatics and interpreting practice and policies. Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson, 1986/1995) and interactional sociolinguistics are the preferred methodologies in all of these areas, which have led to the creation and analysis of interpreting corpora.
