Ms. Tammy Hoffman

I have worked with children having special needs for the past ten years. The first five years I worked as a monitor tasked with managing and supporting childcare providers. The past five years to current I have served the military community by giving care to service member’s children that have special needs. I am versed in autism, hearing impairments, attention deficit disorder, down syndrome, physical impairments, delayed learning, and much more. I have personally been afflicted with amputation and see the need to educate society in assisting and befriending difference.

“Tammy’s Magic Foot: The Most Incredible Super Awesome Amputation (Story) Ever,” is about a young girl and her amputation journey. All the events in this story are based on actual situations. The story highlights the need for understanding and embracing diversity in the world of special needs. Further, it is a real account of the struggles that the main character, Tammy faces and overcomes. The story narrates her trials from the beginning to the end of her transitioning from what society defines as “normal” to physically impaired.

Because of my occupation I have been allotted the opportunity to witness a variety of attitudes from people. Children cannot always effectively communicate their needs and without an advocate, they are often forced to unfairly adapt. I am writing the “Tammy’s Magic Foot,” series to show all children that their voice, thoughts, and needs are valid. The book series honors children with special needs. Each child will be telling their own story. I believe this series will invite open discussions as well as provide a new perspective that will prove educational.

I believe parents and children of all ages will find these picture books informative and endearing. The text supports five different children that readers will be able to identify with in some, if not all capacities. It also lends a listening ear to parents with children having special needs showing them that they are not alone.
