Rie Takeda

Rie Takeda, artist / calligrapher

Rie started practicing calligraphy at the age of five under the creative supervision of her grandmother, a distinguished “Gayu-Ryu” calligrapher. Following her art and design studies in Sapporo and London, Rie’s enthusiasm for new forms of art, paired with her calligraphy techniques, skills and traditional Japanese craftsmanship, led her to discover the Neo-Japonism style.

Rie’s been teaching Shodo, the art of Japanese calligraphy for more than 20 years and she’s been teaching her own mindfulness-based approach to Shodo for over 13 years.

Since 2000, She has worked as a freelance artist and a professional calligrapher in the UK, Europe and Japan.

The artist’s past 15 years have seen many collaborations and exhibitions – both in Europe and Japan, including creating a clothing line for John Lewis, creating a brand logo for Sega and running the popular online Domestika course "Shodo: Introduction to Japanese Calligraphy".
