Kevin A. McGowan was born in 1960 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the Plot section of the city and graduated from Central High School in 1978.
After serving three years in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division as a radio operator/mechanic, McGowan continued studying electronics at Penn State University. Upon graduation in 1985, he worked for Moore Business Forms, Honesdale, Pennsylvania, as a maintenance technician.
He also has degrees from Austin Peay State University (1990), McNeese State University (1993), and the University of Louisiana, Lafayette (2007).
McGowan was an electronic technician for Baker Hughes Inteq and then taught electronic and basic computer courses at Remington College in Lafayette, Louisiana, from 1998 to 2018. Following his career at Remington College, McGowan worked as a Veterans Assistance Counselor for the VA and retired in early 2024.
In addition to technical writing, McGowan writes poetry and fiction. He signs his poetry and fiction "K. A. McGowan" because when he first started submitting poems for publication, there was already a poet named Kevin McGowin. His two poetry chapbooks are Rubric (© 2004 from Pudding House Publications) and No Passengers (© 2005 from The Backwaters Press), and his first full-length poetry book was published by Kelsay Books in 2022.
