Roger D. Brown

Roger D. Brown has lived a life of remarkable adventure and resilience. Starting his driving career at just 11 years old on a ranch in Banning, CA, Roger’s early experiences shaped his unique ability to handle all kinds of machinery and heavy equipment. By 12, he was already picking cotton for two seasons and, at 15, began delivering sand, gravel, and building supplies in a dump truck through the winding roads of Topanga Canyon.

Over the years, Roger expanded his skills to driving 18-wheel rigs, moving livestock, logs, and locomotives. He’s handled some of the largest equipment, including 9-axle rigs stretching 120 feet in length, and operated 100-ton cranes to clean up railroad train wrecks. His work didn’t stop there—Roger also spent 55 years fighting forest and wildland fires using dozers and excavators. He’s worked as a diesel mechanic for trucking companies and on offshore oil drilling platforms, while also spending three seasons packing mules in National Parks.

Travel has always been at the heart of Roger’s life. By the age of 19, he had already visited 47 states and four foreign countries. At 53, he took early retirement, bought an ocean-ready sailboat, and set out on an epic 28-year voyage that took him to some of the world’s most remote locations.

In between these adventures, Roger designed and built timber homes in the California Sierras, took on blacksmithing, and even constructed straw bale homes in Central Mexico. He’s also built roads through the dense jungles along the Mexican coast. Roger’s story, captured in his memoir “Traveler From The Past”, is a testament to living boldly and embracing the unknown.
