Pam Royl refers to herself as "A Writer of Women's Stories, Inspired by History." What began as a family story about the courage and resilience of an ancestor quickly became the drive behind all of Pam's writing. She believes that the magic of historical fiction is found in the spaces left blank by historians. Mostly white men, historians of the 19th century recorded history from their own perspective leaving out the stories about women or presenting them through a lens of prejudice and misogyny. Therein lies a blank slate for a creative imagination.
Through a study of local history in Northumberland County, where she lives, and the wider canvas of Victorian Era women, Pam has re-imagined the life of an extraordinary woman from only the barest of facts.
Developing her fiction writing skills through courses at the University of Toronto, and the mentorship of International award-winning author Donna Morrissey, Pam set her story within the fascinating history of Victorian Era Northumberland County.
Pam is a fervent believer in the courage of women—to rise above impossible circumstances to accomplish extraordinary things.
