Dr. Michelle L. Smith writes across children’s literature, education, fiction, and law, examining how systems shape human behavior long before harm becomes visible.
She is the author of The Quiet Shapes, a four-book children’s series for ages 4–8 — The Notching, The Runner, The One Who Waited, and The Space Between. The series uses minimal language and deliberate visual pacing to support emotional regulation, presence, and personal agency in young readers.
Dr. Smith is also the creator of the Lilah-Bean’s Magical Adventure Series, which introduces civic understanding and emotional learning through accessible storytelling, and the Blood on the Moon fiction series, an adult collection exploring legacy, power, and survival.
Her work is informed by more than fifteen years of professional experience across social services, therapeutic support, ADA-related services, criminal justice, probation systems, and youth advocacy. Before entering law, she worked directly with children, families, and educators in Pennsylvania, supporting youth navigating complex behavioral and environmental conditions.
She later pursued advanced legal education and now works in Law & Technology, focusing on governance, systems integrity, and the ethical architecture of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
Across all genres, her writing centers on a single question:
how space, pacing, and attention shape understanding — and how stories can preserve agency rather than replace it.
Dr. Smith lives and works in the United States.
