Nathaniel Reed is a British educator, author, researcher, and teacher trainer based in Japan. He has more than two decades of experience in language education, including over a decade working in Japanese public schools. He holds an MA in Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, and his work focuses on language education, professional identity, inclusion, and the gap between institutional policy and everyday practice.
He is the founder of ALT Training Online (ALTTO), a free, open-access professional development platform for Assistant Language Teachers in Japan. Through ALTTO, he collaborates with researchers and practitioners to make research-informed training accessible beyond formal institutions.
Nathaniel is the author of More Than an Assistant: ALTs, Inclusion, and the Future of Educational Roles in Japan, a research-based examination of the ALT system that brings together policy analysis, academic literature, and extensive classroom experience. His writing is intended for educators, researchers, and readers interested in education, Japan, and the institutional conditions that shape professional practice.
He has also written conversation textbooks and educational resources for younger learners, including the Learn to Write series and the Fun With picture books. Across his educational writing, he emphasizes curiosity, interaction, inclusion, and learner agency.
Nathaniel lives in Japan with his family, where everyday life continues to inform his thinking about language, education, and the ways institutions shape human experience.
