Callan Davies specialises in people having fun in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. He has published widely on play, game, sport, and culture in the period and written books on Shakespearean drama and an introduction for the Oxford World’s Classics The Merry Wives of Windsor. His book, What is a Playhouse?, was listed as one of History Today’s Books of the Year 2023. He is currently working on a popular history of a Shakespearean playhouse called the Curtain. He is a winner of the Philip Leverhulme Prize 2025.
