Dennis Craig

Dennis was born in Guyana, but he owed much of his achievements in life to his adopted country-Jamaica- where he lived for most of his life .He was the 1961-63 Jamaican Commonwealth Scholar to the U.K. His undergraduate degrees were done externally at the University of London where he also read for a PhD in language education. He spent most of his working life as a lecturer in language education at the University of the West Indies (UWI)in Jamaica .In 1978 he was appointed Personal Professor in language education. Dennis Craig has been described as a giant among Caribbean educators. He is most well known internationally for his immense output on the issues of language learning and teaching in English–based Creole-speaking Caribbean societies. He served as the first University Dean of the Faculty of Education of the UWI. In the late 1980s, he returned to Guyana where he served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana until the mid-1990s.Dennis saw himself as a Caribbean man. He was sociable but also a quiet, reserved person. He was humble and unassuming yet was hailed as a giant amongst Caribbean educators. He had a gift with words.
