Sue Cavill

Hi, I’m Sue.

Born and bred in Hertfordshire, England — and still firmly rooted here — I write psychological family fiction drawn from lived experiences, family history, and the stories people prefer not to tell.

My writing began in 2021 through Michael Hepple’s Write That Book challenge, but my long-standing fascination with family history started much earlier. While mapping a family tree in the early 2000s, I discovered how little survives of what families choose to forget — and how often those silences conceal harm, control, and unresolved trauma.

Writing under the banner Skeletons from the Cupboard, my novels reimagine real people and real events through psychological and Gothic lenses. I start with documented facts, personal accounts, and lived experiences — then explore the emotional and moral consequences left behind: coercive relationships, reputations built on lies, and the damage quietly passed from one generation to the next.

Alongside my fiction, I write nonfiction on abuse in the workplace, focusing on coercive control, manipulation, and recovery. Both strands of my work examine the same question: how power is misused behind respectable façades — and what it costs those who survive it.

I write family stories from the dark side, where truth matters more than comfort.
