Val Nolan holds a Ph.D. from National University of Ireland, Galway. He has published academic articles in Science Fiction Studies, Journal of Graphic Novels and Comic Books, Review of Contemporary Fiction, Irish University Review, Foundation, and Dictionary of Literary Biography. His history of the John McGahern banning controversy appeared in Irish Studies Review, while his essay on Science Fiction and the COVID-19 crisis was a finalist for the British Science Fiction Association awards (non-fiction category). His own fiction has appeared in Year’s Best Science Fiction, Best of British Science Fiction, Interzone, Unidentified Funny Objects, and the ‘Futures’ page of Nature. His story ‘The Irish Astronaut’ was shortlisted for the Theodore Sturgeon Award. He is currently a lecturer in genre fiction and creative writing at Aberystwyth University in Wales.
