John Paul also known as John Paul Puthusery was born and 29th October 1950. He began his career as a freelance journalist and in film society. He also wrote stories for several short plays as well as advertisements. He served in Canara Bank from 1972 for almost ten years. Later, he quit his job and concentrated entirely on movies. He brought Bharath Gopi into the film industry as an artist through his screenplay. He contributed to the talkies industry for more than hundred movies in different languages, mainly in Malayalam.
His famous screenshows include Ilakkangal, Rachana, Palangal, Arorumariyathe, Ormakkayi, Sandhya Mayangum Neram, Chamaram, Kattathe Kilikkoodu, Avidathe Pole Ivideyum, Utsavapittennu, and Kathodu Kathora. He achieved laurels for his working in the cinema industry. The famous among them was the best screenplay writer, awarded by Kerala film critics association award known as Nana Gallop Poll. Apart from direction Paul has also written several books. Amongst which he received the State award for the best film book for the M.T Oru AnuYatra. He also served as a producer for some of the movies. One of the movies which he produced, Oru Cherupunchiri received state, national, and international awards by M.T. Vasudevan Nair. John contributed for MACTA, an association for film technicians as the founder General Secretary.
In 1980, He began his career under the direction of Bharathan and continued till 2009 with visit MB for the movie Nammal Thammil. He brought Bharathan to limelight through his powerful scripts. John worked with several artists like Nedumudi Venu, Sukumaran, Balachandra Menon, KR Vijaya, Mammootty, Poornima Jayaram, Shobana, Vijayaraghavan, Lizy, Kamal Hassan, Jayaram, Urvashi, Murali and Geethu Mohandas. In 1981 his movie, Vida Parayum Munpe received the special jury award from Kerala state film awards for the year 1981.
He was also a guest faculty in several colleges where he gave speeches regarding his career as well as the film industry. The movie Ormakkayi received several awards from the Kerala state film for the year 1982 which includes second best villain, best actress award for Madhavi, best direction award for music to Johnson, best direction for Bharathan, best actor for Bharath Gopi, and best photography award for Vasanth Kumar. In 1987 his movie, Oru Minnaminuginte Nurunguvettam, Nedumudi Venu received the award for his performance as it was critically acclaimed and got public appreciation with state award for the best actor. In 1988, KJ Yesudas received the best male playback singer from National Film Award in his movie, Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam.
He also did work for horror Malayalam movie 'Indriyum' which was mega hit on box-office. John Paul gave his full heart to Malayalam movies with his utmost dedication and his journey and his work in the cinema is commendable. He is an inspiration for the youth. His movies are realistically made. Malayalam industry is blessed with such a great talent.
